The most activated Norwegian Sota summit.
Our The Cloud.
Activation often rigt at the point where it is placed a navigation light for Skien Airport. The mast has a red lamp at 266M or 873FT Located at GPS 591015N 0093200E.
It is also a wooden structure with top marker. It is not recommended climbing the tower due to aging wood. But no warning or access forbidden sign.

Access to the summit is relative easy in summer 7-15 min depending on speed.
About 100m height to climb and rout about 5-700 meter.
In winter with high snow it is time consuming see earlier photos from LA1ENA, LA1TPA and LA1KHA.

I will try to activate this more often on 10.120-cw and 145.550-fm

"Our The Cloud". Very funny Kjell, FB. Hey I haven't even been there since Wednesday!

I see Holtankollen is an easily accessible summit then, like G/SP-015, and it is popular and repeated. As you know, The Cloud is a walk of less than 0.5km with only 75m of height gain, so only a 5 or 10 minute ascent (similar to LA/TM-049) which makes it easy for activators to do as well as other things on the same day (like other summits, or family outings, or even going to work hi!).

Hope you have a good time in G in October.

Best 73,

Tom M1EYP

KX1 displayed a E in display and my 3,5 and 10Mhz unit was not accessible.
The antenna tuning unit did not work. At my aging stage (soon 45y) I believe glasses are mandatory in the rucksack.Could not read the super mini print on my portable programming chart. I called up LA1ENA Aage and he read the instruction for restarting and enrolling the faulty units. Thanks Aage. Soon back on air. Power out some 1w and battery 10.6volt.

No activation to day due to hunting in the area. May be for moose. It is not illegal to go in the woods at this time, and hunters are careful, skilled and sympathetic people. So I find it best not to disturb the animals and the hunters.

Hello Kjell,
Thanks for S2S contact today.
I read with interest your previous comments about lack of answers to CQ SOTA calls on 10Mhz.
I started on 10Mhz today but 10 mins of calling CQ SOTA resulted in no contacts.
I made one CQ on 7.032Mhz and was then busy with calls for 22 mins.
Sent ''QSY to 30m '' on 7Mhz before closing which resulted in 2 contacts on 10Mhz but no spot.
Was pleased to get a QSO on 10Mhz as none recorded before from this summit.

Hello Kjell!

I agree with you about the low SOTA activity on 10.1 MHz. I called CQ SOTA for 15 minutes today on 10.118 MHz from G/WB-021 but got no replies. However, I worked 52 stations on 7 MHz CW (including Aage, LA1ENA)! I was pleased to work 3 non-SOTA stations on 10.1 MHz, because there were none recorded before on 10.1 MHz from this summit!

"Our The Cloud"

I see you're not kidding. LA/TM-049 now appears in the list of the 50 most activated SOTA summits:

http://database.sota.org.uk/topsummits.aspx

No doubt it will soon enter the select group of summits that have been activated 100 times or more. I used to be able to say that I had activated every summit in the "50 most popular", but not now - Grrr!

Keep up the good work on Holtankollen - it is being activated again as we speak!

Hi Marc and Walt,

I'm not going to the imtermediate and full licence course just yet. I'm currently at 6th studing some subjects there and I just want to concentrate on that at the moment. I'll probalbly do the intermediate course after I've finished my two years at 6th form and my full licence course probably a few years after that, so it will ages before me and my Dad M1EYP can activate Holtankollen LA/TM-049 and that is if we want to go Norway and if my Mum lets us go.

Operation in EA6 and LZ has been approved for Foundation licence holders on previous occasions. The Foundation licence is not CEPT approved which means you don't get automatic reciprocal privileges, you have to contact the licensing authority in the destination country.

Very good signal, Kjell, with 3 watts and such a short antenna on 7 MHz band.
I was using the FT-817ND with 5 watts output and coax-fed inverted V dipole (half-wave on 7 MHz) with the centre mounted on a fishing pole about 6m high.

I know that it can be relative difficult to read my signals with this low power.
I qso F6FTB he was running 100w rst 599.He reduced to 5w and it was only partly noticeable still 599. He reduced to 100mW 429/229 due to relative wide rx and some UA BC interference.Mike has 4w and it was 599.My biggest problem is knowing who calling me.
But it prove that on this 4 activations it is possible to obtain more than 4 qso in 30 min on 10MHz even with 100mW. BUT it must be sent a spot.If WX is better to morrow I be back and may be bring my KX1.If wx bad I still be there I hope :-) I hope to cu all on 10.120 cw.

Congratulations to your son for his debut activation Kjell, and best wishes for his return to duty.

I note with some alarm that Holtankollen is being activated four times as often as The Cloud in recent weeks. It is rocketing up the "Most Popular Summits" table, and is set to overtake SP-015 as the most activated summit in SOTA in February 2012 if current trends are maintained!

I too struggled on 20m at the weekend with all the contesters, even with the advantage of CW.

Band was so crowded and with phone QRP it is more of a challenge. Thanks for listening dr om. The Ic803 is a nice rig I agree. We only broth with us a dipole for 20m. But we struggled to have 4 qso.
This is grate contrast to my experiment with 100mW CW on 10.120.On 6 activations minimum requirements of qso was exceeded. My son agreed that CW is more effective.

Thanks for the 5MHz QSO today. I had just finished tuning the 60M legs on a link dipole ready for a SOTA activation tomorrow, when I heard your call. I was on a local hill, but unfortunately not a SOTA.

Thanks

To day back on Holtankollen , but condx was not so nice. Most rapport was 329 to 449 so the chasers had a hard time I belive. Posible that I use 12v battery next activation. The output then 250mW so signal will be better.
But 10 qso to 6 DXCC is acceptable with so low power and 1 hour qrv.

The 3.5MHz 5meter vertical setup.
Last time we traveled to UK I tried to activate Watch Hill G/LD-054 on 80m band. A pole in a fence made the form for a "loading coil" for my 7m wire up an fishing rod. The setup is not effective, but better than no antenna.
And for local qso with 3w CW it should be all right.
I discussed this with LA1ENA Aage when we met 1.may. The easiest would be a "loading coil " on the outer side of the fishing rod handle.
I tried first with a coil with taps every 8 turn. This was wasteful.Rewound the coil ,, and will try to experiment a little more with it.
LA1ENA Aage is some 15km away so he copy all ok.
So come DJ5AV back with a 539 report and I think that is excellent with so short vertical.QRB 1020km
SM5MEK Jan gave me 329 well not to strong in Upsale, But QRB 465km
SM6CMU come with a 579 report over 220Km

So I believe that a small "loading coil " on the base of fishing rod is and easy way to have 80meter capability at hand. No 9:1 to forget at home.... Even with its loss and limited performance it is good enough for a valid activation of a summit in 20 minutes.

Any who has comments or suggestions?

Today my KX1 with 3Watt:
4 QSO on 3.5MHz CW with DL, SM and LA

If you think that my 9volt PP3 battery is dead, you are wrong will use this some more later. Plenty of QSO left in it. The most expensive battery I bought. In a Sunday open shop. hihi

Activated nearly every day now. With KX1 on HF, Yaesu VX3 ob VHF and 4m portable.

13/5 nice day and LA1ENA Aage ivited me on trip to LA/TM-020. Sverre his youngest son 11Y also joined the sota teem.In Ulefoss we picked up LA1DNA Halvard. We got the news on the local repeater that LA1TPA Mads aborted the trip to LA/VF-002 due to high snow and he had no skies to day. He was going to LA/VF-005 and we arranged to have a s2s qso on 80m phone.
On LA/TM-020 it was snow in some patches only.Nearly all gone now.Temp +3c so not summer yet. Sverre made some hot dogs for us. Thanks Sverre for bringing hot-dogs and cooking equipment up. Here we have a future ham /activator..
After activating the 020 summit we took the trip to LA/TM-044. here I was glad to qso LA9GNA on 4m FM.
Plan was to activate LA/TM-049 with LA1ENA Aage but he must back home.

Nice day with my sota friends here...

I see LA/TM-049 continues to climb the Most Popular Summits table, and has now even overtaken some of England and Wales' most activated hills back to 2002, such as Cyrn-y-Brain GW/NW-043, Snowdon GW/NW-001 and Stiperstones G/WB-005.

http://www.sotadata.org.uk/topsummits.aspx

I was lazy this morning and had a lie-in until 7.15am before work, instead of activating G/SP-015, but I must improve my attitude before Holtankollen catches The Cloud. Holtankollen is nicknamed 'The Norway Cloud', but if I'm not careful, my local summit might become known as 'The English Holtankollen'!

I look forward to meeting you guys again in the Autumn, if we can arrange something to fit with your plans.

Hello dr OM M1EYP Tom: Feeling the pressure now?
I prefer to activate after work, cant think any reason for standing up any earlier than absolute necessarily. And a short trip after work is more relaxing.

Today band was quiet, except for qso with DL3JPN, G4WSX, 9A7W and LA1ENA.

HPE CU AGN DR OM TOM.

Yes Kjell, I am feeling a cold wind blowing from Norway every time I am on The Cloud now hi! I find before work is more relaxing. I have too many duties and responsibilities to the family after work for it to be truly relaxing at that time.

On my way back from work in northern Telemark I made the trip up to LA/TM-031.

WX was +25c and it hot in the air like when a thunder weather approach. LA1ENA Aage informed me on the telephone that the 40m and 30m band was very quite. Both this was right it was thunder and static in headphones was unconformable. Hevy rain was approaching from N/E so quick to go back down. Band was silent, but 8HF and 1 VHF QSO.

When close to home I drove up to Holtankollen LM-049 and tryed to make some quick qso on 40m band. Static was 59 BANG so after 2 QSO I drove home to a fast dinner and was qrv 1930 Local time on 70MHz NAC test.LA1ENA turned up for a chat. Bad WX with rain and some lightning..

Hope to be back up on the Holtankollen to morrow.

Activation almost every day from may. A lot of contact have been made and also some s2s. The weather have been from cold and windy to +26c and sun.
Most qso made with KX1 and 3w. Some 4m qso on FM from this summit. Also a new toy is a surplus CB hand held 1w/4w . Now on 10m FM some few local qso.
More wipers observed than last year. And to day a small one was relativ angry. It attacked a stick I held again and again. I believe he was probably in resonant on some frq I use HI .

Well to M1EYP Tom . Watch out we are climbing the most activated list. You can not clime any higher so be aware. HI
I hope to learn all names from all regular OPs but NAMES is so hard for me ....

If you want me to QRS please say so I be glad to qso.

The 9 volt fun never ends...
To day I put up a dipole and used my QRPp Rockmite on the activation. Power was 70 mW when I started. Using still the same 9v PP3 battery I bought in Denmark.
Qso with G0NUP, G4SSH, HA7UG and a "non chaser" DJ2UP.
To day I used a tiny key from British army's man pack 1950s. It was manufactured by McMurdo industries in England. It has a canvas strap that can be attached to the leg. So much better than the US J38 with its metal clamp. The key is clammed to be totally waterproof.
Thanks for fun time.
Do belive I try more with this battery. cant throw it away yet. To much fun left in it.

Activation 1.sept 2010
Vacation over and Holtankollen is again my destination.
My KX 1 is temporary QRT. All the beautiful summer weather in OZ, OK and DL made the menu knobs malfunction. awaiting parts from Elecraft.
( reade rain rain rain...Grrr)
But my backup rig the mighty Rockmite for 10.120MHz is always trusty.
The PP6 9v battery is now almost empty, but look at the contacts that I made.
Power abt 70mW. QRV abt 20min
I think one must give all compliments to the skilled radio amateurs who I qso`ed.

7 qso on 10MHz CW with DL,OE,ON,G and S5
1 qso on 145MHz FM with LA
Complete log with reports always possible to see in the database.

Now I am going to use my 12v battery and power will be abt 250mW. Than signal should be a lot stronger for all who want to try qso me.

First a thank to ON3WAB Peter and DL4FDM Fritz for your feed back.
Your signals here was 599. With a direct conversion receiver with only a x-tal as front end I can promise you that audio here is most interesting. Yesterday LA1EBA/P was active close by at 10.118MHz and when HB9BIN called him he was strong in my receiver. But only by tone I understood he was off frq. I enjoyed Radio Moscow and a local woodpecker when no one answered my calls. The friendly woodpecker was 599 + all the time as he was only some few meters away, No qso was achieved he was only sending H H H H ..........

Activation 2/9-2010
I used my 12v AA chargeable batterypack to power the Rocke mite. Ant dipole 3m up

10 qso on 10MHz CW with DL, F, HB9, G and LA

All reports was generally much better with this higher power level.

As a backup rig I now pack Smallwnonderlabs DSW II 14MHz 4W Transceiver and a 14MHz dipole.

Activation 6/9-2010
I used my 12v AA chargeable battery pack to power the Rocke mite.
Power 250mW
Antenna is dipole 3m up

11 qso on 10MHz CW with DL, F, HB9, G, GM, OE and SP

When on a sota summit and some send a spot or a self spot it is clear that it is possible to activate with even the low power of a rockmite (250mw on 12v).
My experience is that with power in 100mW range qso are more rare, but in 1/2 hour 4 ore more qso is possible.
With well under 100mw ( depleated 9v battery) 4 qso can be a problem.

I wonder if any tried this on 7MHz?
A rockmite kit for this band is in hose here, but not put together yet.
The 7.030 xtal may not be optimal.
Planning getting some for 7.032 and may be 7.034?

feel free to answer here or mail to qrp "at" online.no

Today Hurried home from work and pull on some wool underwear. Temp was -8c and may get some lower when sun go down. Even if it is some warmer up on the summit. So I had nice time to day. Full moon and no wind. ( Wind from east is not noticed on the activation point.)
Battery was nice and cold after all night and day in the car.
I know that G3CWI Richard strongly advise to keep the battery warm. but wonder how much it has to say on the power from battery. It may be significant. But If I take battery inside at home, you be sure that I will go without it next time, so it is in the rucksack in back of car.
Dipole antenna up in east/west direction and a fiberglass pole in feed point.
Supported by snow.

F5JKK Eric I was so sorry not able to complete qso with you to day.
Your signal was down to 529 but mayor problem was strong stations near by or on frq. DC reciever is not the most selective reciever . But relative sensible so weak signals can bee detected if not to qrm, qsb
Please try again.Hope we manage 2x qrpp It would be most impressive.
Please tell me more abt your station Eric-

Hurried up after work. With a warm battery in my pocket I now try to conserve my battery as G3CWI advised. The 9v PP Battery still give qso s on 10.120MHz. The Rockmite is a good rig, but receiver gives my ears no comfort.
I believe I read in the 80`s abt a passive audio filter with Pupin cols salvaged from x-telecoms line boxwa. I have 2 of these:Relive it is 88mH each coil. But cant remember schematic. Any tips?

Kjell, ref AF filters - search of W3NQN. He designed the best known one and markets a kit. The design was in the ARRL handbook.

However, using CMOS opamps you can design a super filter that can replace the whole output stage of the Rockmite. I recommend using Filterpro by Texas Instruments - free software. I also recommend a lowpass filter - not a bandpass one.

Big activity to day in Telemark with LA1ENA Aage and LA1TPA Mads also on summits. LA1ENA Also activated some with his Rockmite and 9v battery.
Fine QSO to day with HA7UG/QRPp Laci was using 500mW and as normal he was super strong here.My power is abt 70mW now.
I used my Rockmite on 5 first qso and than switched to my brand new Yaesu FT817. Filter come in post to day and was in. This radio is smaller than my Icom703, but I do not think it is better on RX.

To make day perfect my car had sunk down in the snow due to temp around 0c.It was resting on the cars underside. And one back wheel wasn't even in contact with frozen ground.Snow chain put on the back wheels of my Viking Ship but still no go. I had to jack up the car and find some planks to put under the back wheels to have some clearance to the snow.
I hour work and the car was free. Grrrr

Thanks for nice 2 xQRPp QSO to day F5JKK Eric. My rig is 70-100mW Most critical is not the signal from you but all signal on my rx. With your signal 559@100mW I believe with 10mw QSO is possible if no station at or near +/- 3KHz present.

I am planing a secret TRX with WERRY low power. I begun discussing this at work for some years ago with LA1ENA Aage. To minimize loss in feed line I plan to put battery and rig in antenna fed point. Only audio, key and grd down.
3 transistor in rig. Can it work? I belie so,Summer fun. Not in -10c

Your voltage regulator will be dropping out soon. If it's a standard 5V one it will stop regulating at about 7 Volts.

My low current superhet is progressing nicely. It draws 4.4mA but has too little gain to be very useful at the moment (I can only hear strong stations!). My low-drop out regulator keeps the whole thing running nicely down to 5.2 Volts. I figure I can still come in below 8mA for the superhet.

Better than expected, I now have a fully functional superhet that draws just 5.9mA! It's not the best performance but it's a resonable trade-off. More optimisation will improve the performance. I could even reduce the current a bit...

Plan was to only activate VHF due to late home and cold. But I bring my Rockmite and my PP3 Battery number 3 with 6.1v for any occasion,

Well up with dipole and noticed that audio in headphones faded out quickly. All was in my rucksack, but to day it was some-17c this morning and I was working in B ( close to LA/TM-031)cold all day -14c.
So this may have taken the last mA from the heroic PP3 battery.
240 qso was the limit . I was to pack down all when I found the old battery 2 in the bottom of the sack. It was not so bad (150QSO) so I tried it and HA7UG Laci come back with 549/569 report. The battery is not valid in competition, but fun anyway. Why I didn't bring my FT817, I was disappointed that a radio with filter to close to 800 have battery capacity like a old flashlight. While the Rockmite to under 30 with a 3 battery just keeps it going for 30 activations. Arghhhh:-)

Test with extended elements on my 10MHz dipole to operate on 7MHz.
Fun to try SSB from time to time, but cw is better due to extra filter.
Thanks to LA1ENA Aage for trying 160m band, he was 599, but I couldn't tune the short wire here. May be possible with a external loading coil.

Test with full size 80m dipole to operate on 3.5MHz.Standard 2x19,5m feed by 10m of RG59 75ohm cable. Rig FT817 power abt 3w.I also bring a MFJ 902 tuner
To all those who love the FT817 I must say sorry for my attitude to the internal battery. I have forgiven the rig for this time. ( I have not started the charging menu correct, so battery was nearly depleted...My mistake so I forget the issue for now. )

Looks like I may QSO HA7UG Laci on any band mode. He is always strong here even with low power.

Nearly activation every day.
The toy for last week is the Windom antenna from SPRAT. It is relative easy to get together.Longest part of antenna is 22m shortest is 4,5m feed by 450 Ohm ladder cable 8,5m long. I use a MFJ with balun included.
Tunes all band from 3.5 to 50MHz.

Have now 200 s2s QSO`s
Will try to do more s2s next week.

Activation expected every day in times 1400 / 1500 GMT
All band modes. 145.550 FM for local qso.10.120 CW prefers for cq.

Our friends in HB9 is also climbing the list. And I belie the DM summit is also soon on the list.

70MHz activation.
To day Qso with I1NAI in JN53WJ from Holtankollen JO49SE qrb 1763km
Rig here YaesuFT817 with Spectrum transverter 10w to dipole 8m up N/S direction.
Also heard SV1HD with 57 on ssb. But for me illegal to use frq 70.200
And he was working split all reddy with DL. on 69MHz
Few qso but great fun.
Of other DX on 70MHz LA4LN in JP50JA qrb 116km
Hope Es for our British friends soon also.
Frq in use often 70.170, 70.180 70.270 CW/SSB and 70.450 FM (Call)

To day 70MHz was silent. LA8IY come back on FM with 59, but he is abt 10km away. heard some BC sound lower in frq. Sending cq for 1/2 hour and heard a ? ?
S50B in JN65XU come back with 559 on CW (70.170MHz) QRB 1511Km
Only complete DX IK6FBB was on but he did not respond to Spot. He was on frq not allocated here in LA so I couldn't call him up. Also some cw ping's received possibly Ms or Aircraft echo.
Hope for Es to all our SOTA friends.
Summit to day was LA/TM-049 in JO49SE
Rig YaesuFT817 with Spectrum transverter reduced to 10w (PA blown substitute with local PA transistor from old VHF commercial mobile rig)

New activity on 70MHz.Loc JO49SE Sota LA/TM-049 When calling cq on 70.170 CW I was spotted by OZ8ZS he received me but couldn't answer due to I was out of OZ allocated frequencies.
I QSY ed to 70.300 and called. Oz2OE in JO45VV QRB 336Km was soon in log on CW
OZ8ZS was 229 in JO55RT QRM my 419?. So a SSB call from OZ1JXY in JO46TX QRB
245km. So LA4LN come back from his home near Oslo JP50JA.
LA4YGA called me , but my dipole was fixed N/S and he was in JO48 so no qso.

Not bad with Tr qso on 70MHz. Not manny active here on CW/SSB. But on FM 10 or more QRV so south Telemark is also here on top.
A
Tried a dipole on 50MHz and SM5EDX was 55A but no qso, Aurora possibility should be able to turn ant to a little east of north.

To our US friends I congratulate you on your national day.
May the future bring prosperity, knowledge and peace.

More fun later

To day VHF activity.
Antenna just 144MHz telescopic whip from http://myworld.ebay.com/jeepbangkok/
Managed to have some qso on this with internal battery. But so few qso. improved the antenna system by taking my 60MHz wire dipole and measure from nose to fingertip. And this is 100cm divided by 2 and 50cm is measured. 2x 50cm is perfect dipole for VHF ( better than none)
When conecting the 12v battery to rig power coul be full 4-5w and more qso posible. Sad that the OZ and SM station beams south. Should listen to us here in Northern parts also. Nearly all use ssb even if called on CW. So no advantage here.

To day activation was not as I hoped. I left early to day and hurried up to the summit. WX was sunny and +2c. FB. After I hang up my dipole I find out that I have forgotten the QRPp rig at home, and in the same small bag was the key and headphones. I had my backup rig YaesuFT817 with me, but no microphone as this is seldom to any use. I had no key and no 3.5mm plug like the headphones. Argggh
Well my small screwdriver was left home before G- trip ...
What to use? I looked in the rucksack and find a most useful item.
The big Norwegian invention and gift to the civilisation. The paper clip.
Even if it is a most clever item it is not a key. Well I managed to make 2 qso.Holding it in the key jack and shorting it against the radio chassis, The CW was so bad that I derided to qo qrt. But in an emergency I would make 4 qso with it. So all bring a paper clip .
Worn on jacket lapel it also symbolise "staying together"

Hi Kjell

It's so easily done.

I remember the day I forgot my mast hi hi!

Improvisation with a stick meant it was truly a handheld activation.

I managed to get sufficient contacts to activate the summit.

Nice to work you on Fountains Fell G/NP-17 last month.

In reply to LA1KHA:

A little comment about the paper clip, which we like too call a Norwegian invention. It is not quiet true. The clip as we know it to day I think is a UK invention. The Norwegian one was not a success as it was too simple.
