Iceland – the land of ice and flame

Iceland – this is one of the most mysterious countries on the planet, which remarkably combines the world of cold glaciers with the warmth of restless volcanoes, endless lava fields with high mountain ranges, modern metropolises with ancient villages. Going on a trek in Iceland, you will find both a refuge from the civilized world, and have the opportunity to use the most modern communication and navigation technology. While trekking, you will discover truly Martian landscapes with soft lines of iridescent mountains, vast valleys covered in black sand and endless fields of frozen lava with stone formations of the most bizarre shapes.

Landmannalaugar Valley

In her creative inspiration, nature has created many masterpieces. One of them is located in the heart of the southern highlands of Iceland – in the high mountain valley Landmannalaugar with its colored rhyolite mountains, lava fields, silent volcanoes and hot springs. For centuries Icelanders have used the valley as a resting point when crossing the mountainous terrain in search of a better life. This place is near the famous Hecla volcano on the edge of the Laugarraun lava field and is part of the Fjallabak Reserve. It is so unusual that it seems like a dream come true. The mountains in Landmannalagarh appear in shades of red, blue, pink, purple, green, and golden yellow, giving the area a surreal look. Here you can see blue Blanukur Peak, which is blue-black in color because of the mixing of lava flows and volcanic ash, and iridescent Mount Brennysteinsald (Sulfur Wave), which is colored by black lava, gray ash, green mosses, and red iron deposits. In front of Brennysteinsalda stretches a boundless expanse of obsidian lava field with volcanic glassy rocks sparkling in the sunlight. The most popular among hikers in Iceland is Mount Blanukur, which offers stunning views. Five glaciers can be seen from here in clear, sunny weather. The Fjallabak Reserve covers an area of 470 km2. Its highest point is Mount Barmur (900 m). The lunar surface near Mount Hecla is so black that it resembles the blue of a crow’s wing. Some lava fields have formed here quite recently. They are dominated by silver lichens and green velvet mosses.

The group will take one of the many hiking trails in the Landmannalaugar Valley. Those wishing to do so will be able to dive into the natural geothermal pools, of which there are several, and relax after an eventful hike.
